March 4, 2024Fishing Report – April 4th, 2024
April 4, 2024Here is the March 20th, 2024 fishing report. My reports are published in the Tampa Bay Times every 4th and 20th of the month! Thank you for reading, and I look forward to getting you all out on the water soon! Capt. Brian.
Fishing has been fantastic in the North Pinellas region over the last couple of weeks. Stable temperatures have brought tons of live bait to the flats and along the beaches and the fish are responding.
Trout are everywhere and easy to catch right now, even on artificial lures. Anyone who can cast and retrieve a paddle tail or jerk worm on a light jig head can catch several trout in an outing. The larger fish are still congregating around the spoil islands in St. Joseph Sound. The schools are big but very tight and being harassed not only by anglers, but several dolphin, who chase them from island to island. Usually when the dolphin are patrolling the exterior perimeter of the islands, the trout will push up very tight to the rocks. If left alone long enough, they will begin to eat in only a foot of water and can be very competitive since there are so many in a general area at times. Most trout are starting to chase the sardines better than live shrimp. Small movements are key to getting on the school. If you get a couple of bites and that is all, move slightly towards the area the bites initiated. Sometimes the school is just a few yards away and will continue to eat.
Redfishing has been great as well. Several fish have been schooling along the mangroves and oyster beds during the high tides. Cut baits have worked best on my trips. Cut pinfish, ladyfish, mullet, and sardines are all choice baits for attracting and hooking several redfish.
