March 24, 2024Fishing Report – April 20th, 2024
April 22, 2024Here is the April 4th, 2024 fishing report. My reports are published in the Tampa Bay Times every 4th and 20th of the month! Thank you for reading, and I look forward to getting you all out on the water soon! Capt. Brian.
Heading further into spring, fish patterns change a bit and we are experiencing that now in Northern Pinellas county. The consistent trout bite that we have had over the last couple of months is dwindling slightly, as the trout begin to push off to the west with warmer temperatures and timing of their natural migration.
Although plenty of fish remain in St. Joseph Sound, they are starting to appear on the western side of the barrier islands along the beaches and rock jetties. Bait is extremely plentiful as well along the beach, attracting more and more predator fish such as snook, redfish and mackerel as well. The large schools of threadfin herring and scaled sardines have also brought in a few kingfish just a few miles out. Although they are very sparse in numbers, some anglers have reported bites as close as 3 miles from shore, but most consistent kings have still remained well offshore.
On the flats, redfishing has been very productive with several fish moving along with the mullet in most cases. Cut pinfish have worked the best for my trips lately, although cut ladyfish or mullet are often a good choice as well. Snook still remain surprisingly low in numbers. Perhaps the cool winter forced them further into the rivers and east. Hopefully they will begin to migrate westward soon and congregate in the normal locations. The few that are around have been responding well to sardines and threadfin herring. April is usually a fantastic month to start seeing more snook on the end of your line.
