Fish and Fall Are Here!

Hey everyone! Hope you’re having a great fall wherever you may be in this world! One thing is for sure, here in Florida, the fishing has really taken off lately. The weather is cooling, the water is cooling, and the fish are responding!

The redfish bite has been really good on certain tides. Incoming tide has been the best time to catch a few of these strong fighters. Fishing with cut baits, or live sardines has worked the best for me and my charters. Most fish are within the slot but there are few oversize fish being caught as well. This is my favorite time of year to target redfish.

There are still several snook around along the beaches, but they are transitioning towards the backcountry and stopping along the spoil Islands and the main shore before entering the creeks and rivers for their winter residency. They have been pretty cooperative especially after chumming them into a frenzy with a few live baits. A lot of them are in the 20 – 27 inch range with a few slot fish mixed in.

Of course, trout are going to be invading St. Joseph Sound as they do every year, offering lots of action for novices and experts alike. We’ll be throwing live sardines in the beginning and switching to live shrimp and even artificials as we get further into the winter months. Currently there are lots of the smaller trout on the grass flats to catch with the larger female trout steadily moving in each week.

On my near shore trips, spanish mackerel have been getting better and better every day, with a few kingfish mixed in now. That bite should continue to get better over the next month. For any of you looking for some screaming drags on light tackle, that fishing is hard to beat!
