May 23, 2024Fishing Report – July 20th, 2024
July 22, 2024Here is the June 4th, 2024 fishing report. My reports are published in the Tampa Bay Times every 4th and 20th of the month! Thank you for reading, and I look forward to getting you all out on the water soon! Capt. Brian.
As the daytime temperatures are steadily in the 90’s in the north Pinellas region, fish are beginning to adjust their patterns and seek cooler water. Trout are moving towards the beaches and inhabiting grass flats around the passes in 5 to 7 foot depths.
Although the larger trout that we see in the winter and spring aren’t as plentiful this time of year, there are tons of smaller trout to catch. Snook are finally showing up in better numbers on the beaches, especially around the points of the passes. Any of the rock structures or grass beds lining the shore along the barrier islands will also hold snook and trout alike. Even a few redfish have been caught in the same areas lately. The amount of snook aren’t what we have seen in years past and conservation efforts are still necessary to protect and repopulate snook. Recent years of red tide outbreaks and overfishing have definitely taken a toll on their population. Tarpon are migrating up and down the coast, and starting to pile into the passes from Clearwater all the way north to Tarpon Springs.
Anglers are seeing bunches of fish in their normal lanes of travel, just a few hundred yards from shore. Live crabs are certainly a favorite bait, but pinfish and grunts have been getting hook ups as well. Threadfin herring and sardines will also get bitten as long as the presentation is right. Often times, cut baits laid along the bottom in their travel path will get picked up by fish that aren’t always visible from above.
