Here is the June 4th, 2023 fishing report. My reports are published in the Tampa Bay Times every 4th and 20th of the month! Thank you for reading, and I look forward to getting you all out on the water soon! Capt. Brian.
Tarpon are all over the north Pinellas beaches and migrating from the south and into the passes from Clearwater to north of Tarpon Springs. Even shore anglers are reporting seeing pods of tarpon just a few yards from their wading locations. However, on the bite has been a little tough due to extreme clear water conditions. Downsizing leader and hooks has been effective, but you risk breaking off fish. When they get into the middle of the deeper passes with less visibility, heavier line is effective.
Pinfish and threadfin herring each are working although a pinfish under a cork has been the most productive. Of course crabs are one of their favorite meals so if you can purchase them at your local tackle store or dip a few on the crab flush during strong out going tides, your odds will increase. Snook has begun to inhabit the beaches. But yet again, very clear water has made them skittish and easily spooked. Sometimes chumming with lots of live sardines will get them in a frenzy. Otherwise being patient and continually placing baits in the right place is what it takes.
Although, numbers are low right now for large groups of snook, but June is typically a month where we see them gather for spawning in the troughs and swash channels along the barrier islands. Trout have inhabited some of the same areas where we find snook, and occasionally redfish too.
Afternoon thunderstorms are going to become a regular event so early morning fishing will be necessary. Also, late evening after the rains can equal big rewards on the following tides around the passes for tarpon and snook.
