July 22, 2024Fishing Report – August 20th, 2024
August 20, 2024Here is the August 4th, 2024 fishing report. My reports are published in the Tampa Bay Times every 4th and 20th of the month! Thank you for reading, and I look forward to getting you all out on the water soon! Capt. Brian.
The typical weather pattern associated with this time of year has forced most anglers to fish early in the morning to around midday before the skies open up. The rainy weather has cooled the waters a bit, but it is still hovering in the high 80s and low 90s by lunchtime. This has caused many of the inshore gamefish to seek cooler, moving waters. Snook are still congregating in the swashes and troughs along the beach, however, we are approaching the end of their spawn season so the larger females tend to eat less. it can be frustrating to fish near several snook and not get any bites.
Sometimes it’s best to move to the next group or find a different type of terrain where they may be foraging. Smaller males are more likely to eat quicker than the bigger fish, especially with smaller bait. Trout are still quite abundant near the passes in 4 to 7 feet of water. When the tides are moving quickly, the bite is much better. Although you can still get some fish to cooperate on slack tides. I will often put a split shot about a foot up from the hook and cast a bait into any sand pockets I can find. It exposes the bait more and allows the trout to find and eat them easily. There are still a few tarpon around, but numbers have dwindled. The ones I’ve seen lately are coming out of the passes across the sandbars moving south. Grunts and pinfish under a float have worked best for me this year.
